You might’ve heard the acronym ‘GDPR’ floating around lately, but do you know what it means, or even what it stands for? Well, if you’re not sure, we’re here to help – Mary-Jayne, our Head of Customer Relationship Management & Compliance here at Mishon Mackay has all the information you need to know.

Can you tell us a bit more about your role and what GDPR means?

I have been with the company for 13 years – ten of those in HR – and now I am Head of Customer Relationship Management & Compliance. My position now very much focuses on the customer journey and everything that goes hand in hand with that.  A large part of my position here is looking after compliance, and with the implementation of the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) just around the corner, now is an opportune time for me to really get under the skin of this for the business.

What information do you collect?

Under GDPR, we can only collect and use the data we need for a transaction. My role is to ensure our staff know exactly what this is and how it can be stored and used.We also collect optional data from our customers/site visitors (consent based) for marketing purposes.

Where do you get the information from?

Generally, in our industry, you supply us with your personal information in order for us to sell or let your property or indeed find you the perfect home. There are of course some details we must obtain in order for us to do this and ensure we are compliant in all governance surrounding our industry. The information we collect is held on a centralised system, only obtainable by our staff who will never pass on your information without your prior consent. We will always explain why your information would need to be supplied to a third party if this was ever necessary.  You can of course unsubscribe from our mailing lists at any time; we would only keep your information relating to, for example, a property search, for as long as you would like us to (unless it’s needed to fulfil a contract). Due to the new regulation we will now requalify all of our registrants who haven’t been in contact every 12 months to confirm they still wish to hear from us. Our privacy policy is in place and available to all of our customers to specifically explain what we are doing with data, and who we would need to share it with and why. 

What does GDPR mean to a customer on a day-to-day basis?

The whole idea of GDPR is to provide complete transparency over what happens to our customers’ personal data, how it is stored and used. Businesses must now have a valid lawful basis in order to process personal data, meaning customers are protected and in control of its use.

Why is Mishon Mackay focussing on GDPR?

It is a legal requirement and is nothing but beneficial for both our business and our customers. The legislation ensures that we only hold and use the data we need, and our customers can rest easy knowing exactly how and why we process this information.

The new General Data Protection Regulations will come into force on 25 May 2018, replacing the 1998 Data Protection Act.
