While we often hear about the upsizing of a property to accommodate growing families and accumulated “stuff” from over the years, there comes a time when we look to downsize.
Whether it’s the looming pressure of keeping a property your family no longer fills, too much upkeep or the general longing for a home that is that little bit more ‘intimate’, at some point in life downsizing is a consideration for most families.
So, what do you need to consider when looking to downsize?
When the time does come for you to downsize it’s a good idea to decide on the things you absolutely can’t compromise on.
For example, it might be that you still want a decent sized kitchen or that the garden must face in a certain direction, perhaps off-street parking is important to you or maybe you want your new home to have a downstairs toilet. All of these things may seem small in the grand scheme of things but can impact how ‘at home’ you feel and the overall comfortability of your new house.
Downsizing sometimes means moving to a flat which could also take some getting used to after many years in a house. Would you be looking for a purpose-built flat or do you prefer a converted flat that might offer some more character?
Either way, you should check the length of the lease, service charges and whether there is any work due to the block over the next few years as it’s likely you’d need to factor that into your ongoing payments.
