Boxing with Paul Bott

Paul Bott, Senior Negotiator in Kemp Town has been boxing for about five years. He explains his love of the sport:

I have been boxing now, quite seriously for about five years, and I truly love the sport. It all started as a bit of fun, back in 2007, when I was meant to do an exhibition bout at Hove Town Hall, in aid of a cancer charity, however at the last minute my opponent withdrew, and as I did not want to let anybody down, I took a real bout. A guy called Andy Foreman, who was a very experienced boxer. On the night, it was a real baptism of fire, and lasted one minute fourty six seconds, before the referee stepped in and saved me, thank god.

Since then I have had 6 competitive bouts, and raised around £10,000 for various charities, which I am very proud of. I still box at Moulsecoomb Amateur Boxing Club, under the watchful eye of Nick Bell, the head coach.

Last year Nick, who is aware of my passion for the sport and the club, invited me to become a trainee coach at the club, and I was thrilled and said yes immediately. So I now coach the young lads on a Wednesday evening. I teach them basic techniques, such as defence, balance, head movement and footwork. I really enjoy my role within the club.

I was even prouder when the big boss Alex Mackay visited the club, and he was really impressed by the amount of energy and passion that Nick and his brother Matt have for the club. He very generously agreed to sponsor the club, buying them a much needed ring, which is amazing, and new kits, from shorts to full tracksuits, which really gives the kids an identity when boxing at other clubs, and around the country, and for which they are very grateful.

We now have two national champions who proudly wear their Mishon Mackay tracksuits, Max Smith- Hashim, who is the national under 28kg champion, and Yuji Ishigaki, who is the novice under 60kg champion, which he won in Sunderland last weekend. Amazing!

I feel an enormous amount of pride when I wear my Mishon Mackay tracksuit when coaching these kids, at was is without any doubt the best amateur boxing club in the city, Moulsecoomb Amateur Boxing Club.

In the photos below we have Nick Bell in the corner with Max Smith-Hashim. Richard Reed, coach, with a rising star Jordan Hughes, Sam Mason on the pads with me. Two other rising stars Jessie Hearne and Sam Smith.
